What are some other great or similar movies?

Hi, I'd like to expand my list of favorite movies, but I'm very picky. Some of my favorite films are "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Sergeant York, Ben Hur, and Hamlet (Olivier version.)" I really like stories with unique characters, an adventure or historical backdrop, and big thematic content with a powerful moral or message to the story. I also like small town comedies with a lot of eccentric characters like the great film "Whisky Galore." Anyone know other films to suit my taste?
