How do ecosystems respond to disasters?

how do ecosystems respond to disasters such as flood, drought, etc. Also, how do new organisms inhabit an area after it has been terrorized? i know the basic pattern of how lichens first inhabit and then more simple primary consumers inhabit the area such as gres, but is there anything else to it? like what to animals and plants do to survive disaster-stricken areas?
